Dieting the West Coast Way with the LA Weight Loss Diet

With LA fitness now being a global brand their LA weight loss centers are not far behind. With television commercials and the website both boasting great success for some. Here we review the la weight loss diet.

What is the LA weight loss diet

The LA weight loss centers were established in 1984 and are owned and run by LA fitness. They combine their fitness centers with a weight loss program to incorporate a new lifestyle for their customers.

So successful is the LA weight loss program that they are able to open new weight loss centers in their own right. Combining fitness and weight loss in this way makes this a viable diet to explore.

What happens at the LA weight loss center

First you are given an appointment with an LA weight loss councilor. There you’ll discuss your goals, what the diet entails and what it can do for you.

You are advised what you can eat in terms of protein, vegetables, fruits etc. plus there are the “LA Lite” bars. These are soy protein snacks that you purchase from the center as part of the plan. You are also given a chart of allowable foods as part of the plan, a fitness program and a schedule to meet with a councilor 3 times a week.

The LA weight loss program guarantees results

For their part of the plan they’ll guarantee you’ll reach your weight loss goal and they put this in writing to you. This sounds very good but the program is very rigid and if you stray once you void the guarantee since the guarantee is dependant on you following the program.

On a positive side the fitness program is group based and can be a good source of support as there are other dieters there with you. Having the councilors at the fitness center makes the plan convenient for time and travel purposes. But meeting 3 times a week is still alot for some.

The LA weight loss diet overall

The councilors you meet are payed using commission based on the “LA lite” nutrition bars they sell you. So these expensive extras are heavily promoted. These bars are snacks and yet form part of the program and guarantee so you’re locked into buying them.

The LA weight loss diet is basically an expensive calorie controlled diet with exercise thrown in. This is something you could do for yourself at a fraction of the cost. However if you have money to burn and you need someone to nag you 3 times a week, then it really could be for you. People have had success with it but we think, overall, if you’re on a tight budget then we’d recommend you spending your dieting dollars elsewhere.

The cause of bad breath on low carb diets

The latest dieting craze has no doubt been the low carb high protein diets. Those of you on Atkins, South Beach etc will no doubt have noticed a number of changes since you took up the diet. And no I’m not talking about the remarkable weight loss I am talking about your bad breath. Now it may not have been noticeable to you but I suggest you ask your friends or relatives whether there has been a detioration and you may be surprised by the answer. In fact you may even find your friends moving away from you when you speak which is always a sure sign of bad breath.

So what’s the cause of all this bad air? Well depending on which medical speak you speak with there are a number, yet similar, reasons for the problem. One of the reasons is directly related to the increase in protein which most of the low carb diets advocate.

Basically, we all have a large number of useful bacteria living mainly on our tongue and at the back of our throat. These bacteria are supposed to be there, because they assist humans in digestion by breaking down proteins found in specific foods, mucous or phlegm, blood, and in diseased or “broken-down” oral tissue.
When these “beneficial” bacteria come into contact with these compounds, the odorous and “lousy-tasting” volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs’) are released from the back of the tongue and throat, as Hydrogen Sulphide, Methyl Mercaptan, and other odorous and bad tasting compounds.

Since the bacteria are meant to be in our mouth there is no way we can remove them permanently. So, no amount of brushing or tongue scraping will get rid of the VSCs’. The only scientifically proven way of curing your bad breath (Halitosis) is by attacking the bacteria’s ability to produce VSCs’ and by converting the VSC into non-odorous and non-tasting organic salts.

There are a number of ways in which the problem is worsened and the most common way is with dry mouth. This generally occurs while you are asleep and hence the reason you sometimes wake up with “morning breath”.

Although some cases of dry mouth are naturally occurring, most cases are caused by one of these factors:
1. Prescription Medications (usually prescribed for high blood pressure or depression)
2. Antihistamines
3. Adult Beverages
4. Mouthwashes with alcohol in them
When your mouth is dryer, you have less Saliva. Saliva naturally contains Oxygen, which keeps your mouth healthy and fresh. These bacteria are anaerobic, which simply means that they will thrive and make more sulfur in the presence of little or no oxygen. Thus if you have less Saliva, you have less oxygen, thereby creating an anaerobic environment, perfect for the bacteria to produce more of these odorous and sour/bitter compounds.
Because of the increase in higher protein foods, on an Atkins type diet, especially dairy products, the amount of Volatile Sulfur Compounds increases dramatically and as such your breath gets worse accordingly. The only way to fight the problem is to try and supply oxygen to the bacteria causing the problem and remove as much of the VSCs’ as possible. This can be done in a number of ways:

Drink loads of water. This will help ensure your tongue and throat are kept moist and supplying oxygen to the VSC producing bacteria.
Always clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner before brushing your teeth last thing at night and first thing in morning. You should also try and do this after every meal too.
Use a mouthwash which does not contain any alcohol as alcohol can dry your mouth and make the problem worse. You can also dramatically improve matters by using an oxygenating mouthwash. You can find one by doing a Google on “oxygenating mouthwash”.
Don’t chew gum, which contains sugar, to try and mask the bad breath. This can make matters worse. Use a sugar free gum instead.

The bottom line is that low carb diets will cause bad breath, although for some it will be a lot worse than others. However, help is at hand so if you want to shed the weight and not shed any friends then make sure and heed the advice given above.

Why Bonsai Beginners Love Baby Jade

Bonsai trees are a great way to have a healthy thriving plant as well as exercise some of your creativity and one of the best plants to start with is the Baby Jade. A Succulent bonsai, this plant is sometimes called the Elephant Plant or the Small Leaf Jade and is native to South Africa. It is quite tolerant to under watering and is a good beginner plant for home or office.

Baby Jade is a rather new bonsai which develops quite quickly and, unlike other types of Bonsai, can go for long periods without water. It can grow to 3 or 4 meters in the wild and being a succulent, it stores it’s water is the trunk, branches and leaves.

This lovely plant is easy to care for and style and great to look at too! The young plant has green bark which turns reddish brown and then slate gray as it ages. It has fleshy round leaves that range from pale gray to blue-green to dark green which are complimented by reddish colored stems. It blooms with tiny star shaped pinkish purple flowers. The trunk and branches can be droopy and make lovely long cascades.

The Baby Jade Bonsai is a tropical plant the doesn’t do well in climates that get below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If you live in a warm climate it will do well outdoors in full sunlight, but if you are in a colder area it is best to keep your Bonsai inside in the winter and Baby Jade will the fine as long as you provide it with enough light. Watering should be done regularly – water until the soil is moist and let the soil dry between waterings. Don’t add too much water so that there is a standing puddle in the pot.

Pruning and shaping your bonsai is part of the fun and you should be sure to let the soil dry before you cut off roots or heavy branches. After you have made any cuts, water sparingly until the cut heals over. If you want to stop a branch from growing longer, remove the terminal bud. To shape the tree, pinch the buds and branches that are growing where you don’t want them. Be sure to pinch gently with your fingers. Baby Jade is a fast grower and will need to be pinched quite frequently during the growing season. Use a 1mm aluminum wire to rotate branches and leaves.

You should repot your Baby Jade bonsai every 2 years. This is best done in the early spring. Befor repotting, dry the soil out thoroughly. After repotting, keep Baby Jade in a shady spot until you see some new growth and once you do start to water it again as usual.

Trading Logic – The Key to Making Huge Profits Fast

If you trade any financial market, you will be aware that the majority of investors simply don’t make money. It’s not because they lack trading ability – investors don’t make money because they don’t understand trading logic.

A focus on trading logic is essential for any trader who seeks to make money. Forget, opinions and emotions, and focus on the reality of the trading environment – you can then apply trading logic, to make huge profits consistently.

Here are some observations of trading logic, and how you can use them to your advantage.

The Market Price

Firstly, before we look at anything else, we need to look at what moves financial markets:

Supply and demand (fundamentals) + Investor perception = Market price

Therefore, prices are determined not just by supply and demand – but also by people. So, what does this trading logic tell us? – Predictive theories don’t work, but odds theories do work.

There are lots of theories that claim markets move to a scientific theory – this isn’t true – if they did, then everyone would know the price in advance – and there would be no market!

Correct trading logic tells us that while we don’t know exactly where prices are going to go, we can calculate the odds of a move – by studying price history.

While human nature is unpredictable – driven by the emotions of greed and fear, there are patterns that constantly repeat – and this leads us to technical analysis.

Human Psychology Repeats Itself

Trading logic tells us that human psychology repeats itself – because we can see it in charts.

Although there’s never a perfect scenario, we can calculate the odds of success of a trade – based upon what happened in the past. Therefore, by using a soundly based trading method, we can make money – over time.

Day Trading V Long Term Trend Following

From the above, trading logic tells us that day trading is futile. Why? – Because human nature is very unpredictable over short-term time spans. Human nature only becomes predictable over long-term time spans. Look at any currency, (or any financial instrument over time) and you’ll see long-term trends – and they’re the ones you need to focus on.

Emotions are a Trader’s Worst Enemy

Traders hate to trade alone – they constantly seek opinions, and success, from someone else. As the bulk of traders get it wrong, they step into the trading majority and find themselves caught up in a losing mentality.

The only way to trade successfully is in isolation – using trading logic to look at the facts, not what others think.

Trade Entry and Exits

Trading logic tells us that market timing is futile. Why? Because you cannot predict – and that’s what market timing tells us to do. Therefore, you should follow market action – rather than try and predict it. This means leaving top and bottom picking, to the losing majority.

Money Management

As we’re playing an odds game, money management is essential – we must be constantly trying to preserve our capital.

If you lose 50% of your capital, you have to make 100% on your next trade, just to get back to even – so try not to lose money in the first place! This is of course difficult – and involves doing two things:

1. Only trading when the odds are heavily in your favour – and in many markets, this means trading only a few times a year.

2. Taking enough risk – so you aren’t stopped out of your trade, by normal market volatility.

Risk and Reward

Trading logic tells us that risk is a combination of the following factors:

Market volatility + Trading methodology + Money management = Risk of trade.

This complex interaction is much more than setting a stop, or allocating 2% of capital to a trade – which is the way most traders view it. It involves seeing risk in a different light.

Some trades you make may look risky – but if you have balanced the equation correctly, the odds will be on your side.

Trading Logic

There are many other examples of trading logic, that we can look at – but the above covers the most important areas.

To make money, you need to see the markets, and their behaviour, as they are – not how you want to see them.

Don’t make the same mistake as the majority of traders. Instead, think logically, and without emotion – and it will lead you to huge long-term gains.

Is Slow Play Ruining Your Weekend?

There I am driving to the golf course for my 8:00 AM tee time. I’m early enough to hit the practice range and putting green with plenty of time to spare.

The weather is perfect, the sun is out, and I arrive at the first tee with my buddies, looking forward to a morning on the golf course. We hit our drives then begin our walk down the fairway. Looking around, I can’t help but think it doesn’t get any better than this!

After carding a few routine pars and bogeys, we make our way to the second tee, exchanging a few jokes along the way.

Unfortunately, that early morning high doesn’t last long. You see, as we approach the next tee we find a foursome teeing off with two other groups waiting in line.

We realize what we’re in store for… a long five and a half hour round.

Slow play seems like the rule, not the exception…

If you’ve played a fair amount of golf, then you’ve experienced your share of long rounds. Nothing ruins the enjoyment of a beautiful day on the golf course more then long waits between every shot.

Slow play is becoming epidemic, and it may be the biggest reason why some people simply play fewer rounds, or quit playing altogether.

So how do we go about dealing with this very real challenge?

Let’s look at what Ready Golf is and see if following a few simple guidelines can help overcome the frustration of slow play.

Ready Golf is about planning ahead…

Now, a lot of players assume that the rules of Golf and the rules of Ready Golf are different. But that’s really not true. Ready Golf is about anticipating your next shot so you’re ready to play when it’s your turn.

Where do the rules of Ready Golf apply?

In all situations and at all times throughout your round. On the tee, in the fairway and on the green. Golf is a social game, and should always stay that way. Ready Golf does not mean ignoring your playing partners and rushing through your round.

Taking it from tee to green, let’s outline a few common sense steps to help move things along.

On the Tee…

Ready Golf does not mean hitting out of turn. Only if you have the honor and are not ready should someone else hit first. Don’t stand around waiting for the next player in line to take their turn if they’re not prepared.

On the fairway…

Once off the tee, things can get even slower. And, believe it or not, riding in carts can cause delays if they’re not used properly.

All players should get to their shots as quickly as possible. That doesn’t mean walking in front of players getting ready to hit. You can always move off to the side of the fairway and get as close to your ball as you can.

Size up your next shot as you are reaching your ball, decide on club selection, then move to your ball after players behind you have hit up.

What is one of the biggest time wasters on the fairway?

Playing Coffee Clutch Golf. Your foursome moves from shot to shot together with everyone stopping at each and every ball. There is only one time everyone should move up in a group like this. That’s when players hit their shots on the same line and fairly close to each other.

What about carts?

Drivers should drop partners off, have them take several clubs if needed, then move on to their own ball and get ready to play. How many times have you seen drivers stopping at every shot on the way to the green? That simply defeats the purpose of using a cart to speed up play.

Finding Lost Golf Balls…

So there you are on the third hole. You hit your drive and begin walking down the fairway. To your surprise the fairway appears to be open! But as you approach your ball you realize the foursome ahead is searching for a lost ball. Everyone’s searching and nobody is getting ready to play their shot!

Should everyone help look for lost golf balls? Of course. But you should do it after you hit your own shot.

Here is a quick guideline: if you’re closest to the green, then help out first. If you’re farthest from the green, play your shot then begin helping out. With this Round Robin approach, your foursome can keep things moving.

On the green…

What’s the one thing you should do to speed up play around the green? You should leave your clubs at the back of the green on the side closest to the next tee.

Nothing is more disconcerting than standing in the fairway and watching players walk to the front of the green after putting out.

Worse yet? Waiting for players to mark their score cards before moving along. Mark your card on the next tee; don’t make the next party wait while you tally your score.

Here are two other things to keep in mind to speed things up…

First, survey and line up your putt while other players are putting. That means being ready when it’s your turn.

Second, use the Continuous Putting Rule if you’re not in someone else’s line. If you leave yourself a short putt coming back, don’t mark your ball. Take your stance, make a smooth stroke and make your putt.

Emulating tour pros has done more to slow down play than anything else. Try to make your putt in about half a minute once it’s your turn. That’s plenty of time to approach the putt, take your stance and make the putt without rushing.

The bottom line…

A four hour round of golf should be the rule, not the exception. Use the common sense guidelines presented above and you’ll guarantee yourself a more enjoyable round of golf.

If you think playing five and a half hour rounds are the norm, if you’ve given up on having Saturday afternoons to yourself, put these Ready Golf Rules to the test and you’ll experience an astonishing improvement in your round!
