The county of Dorset on England’s south coast is a county of great contrast but one that will reward the determined traveller again and again. Take a break from driving and jump the three-hour rail journey from London Waterloo to Bournemouth. Deer can often be seen as you pass through the New Forest after Southampton, so keep one eye open.

Bournemouth is a clean and prosperous seaside city with hundreds of hotels ranging from the tiniest, to large international standard establishments. The beach is long and sandy, and though it may be busy on the weekends in the summer, it is long enough to accommodate all comers.

Five miles to the east you will find the pretty ancient town of Christchurch where the Priory stands cheek by jowl with the ruined mediaeval monastery. Stroll beside the twin rivers of Avon and Stour as they head for the sheltered harbour and onward to the sea at Mudeford Quay. The Quay is well worth a visit too, if only to watch the kids of all ages pulling the crabs from the fast flowing Run as it dashes through the channel.

To the west of Bournemouth is the revitalised town of Poole, and the huge natural harbour, second in size only to Sydney. Take a boat trip to Brownsea Island and spot the rare red squirrels. Visit Sandbanks too, and millionaires row, where film stars, pop people and sportsmen and women like to take a fancy to the modern art deco homes.

From the end of the Sandbanks peninsula take the old chain link ferry to Studland Bay. There is a beautiful sandy beach here too and you can walk along the shore to the pretty village of Studland, but be aware that this is a nudist beach. And it’s used, at all times of the year, making the patrons much hardier souls than I! It’s not unknown for them to approach strangers too. Methinks they hide a weird sense of humour!

From there, head south towards Swanage. Stop off at Wareham and take a drink at the Inns on the picturesque quay. Take the Swanage road and pass the impressive ruin of Corfe Castle. Spend a while climbing the fortifications, and experience the feel of what it must have been like defending a fortress in the middle ages.

Swanage is a small typically English seaside town, almost unchanged in the last fifty years, and no less attractive for that. You can arrive there by steam train on the Swanage Railway from Wareham. Travel west of Swanage and the terrain becomes wilder. This is Purbeck country, the Purbeck Hills, Purbeck stone, and the Jurassic coast.

Towering cliffs, strange rock formations such as the Durdle Door, and Lulworth Cove are worth seeking out. This coast is known as the Jurassic coast for the vast number of dinosaur remains that have been and still are regularly discovered. The original Jurassic Park! Continue westward to Weymouth, another English seaside town. But Weymouth has much more to offer than most. The quayside that boasts working fishing vessels coming and going on every tide, the nature reserve, and the monk’s swannery at Abbotsbury. Buy fresh fish and crabs from the boats moored at the quay, take the seasonal quick ferry to Jersey and Guernsey. It’s a four hour trip but you can be there and back in a day. And don’t forget to visit the strange place that is Portland Bill to the south and west of the town. It is here in Portland harbour that the Olympic Games sailing events will take place in 2012.

Continue westward to Lyme Regis on the Devon border. It was here that Meryl Streep filmed the famous scenes from A French Lieutenant’s Woman on the Cobb, the old stone quay that curls out into the channel. Walk on it at your peril in high winds, for it is slippery, and not flat!

Time to turn inland. Beaminster and the old church, before continuing on to the county town of Dorchester. This is Thomas Hardy country, there is a statue to him at the top of the High Street. Dorchester is Casterbridge in his books, The Mayor of Casterbridge, and Tess of the D’Urbervilles, and there are memories of him everywhere.

Continue northward to Shaftesbury and Sherborne, home of Sir Walter Raleigh. Visit the Abbey, the castle and the antiques shops that abound in the town. In the north of the county the countryside and the people differ markedly to the costal strip. A slower pace of life, more time for everything. The land is rolling, green hills on chalk downland that is home to rare breeds of sheep. In places huge sculptures have been carved from the hillside where the thin topsoil has been removed revealing the white chalk beneath. White horses, riders on horses, and the mediaeval pornography that is the Cerne Abbas Giant. Visit Blandford Forum too, another riverside town that can trace its heritage back to Roman times, and beyond.

Take a slight detour over the border into Wiltshire and see the county capital of Salisbury and the beautiful cathedral with the tallest spire in England.

Dorset is a fine county to explore, full of quaint thatched cottages, and beautiful pubs that anyone can enter at any reasonable time. Rest your feet for an hour, you don’t need to buy alcohol if you prefer not, you’d be made just as welcome buying soft drinks and hearty crusty rolls. For the most part the food is good and fairly priced. Distances in Dorset between the towns are small and you can see a great deal in a week, but hey, two weeks would be all the better!

Podcasting is a great way to reach people and deliver your
message. But what happens when it gets your web site shut
down?

No, I’m not talking about copyright issues, spam or any of
the things you might think of. I’m talking about the problem
of “bandwidth”. I’ll bet you never even thought of that!

Here’s the problem: Podcast files can be very large. Some of
them are over 75MB in size. Every time a file is downloaded
you’re using bandwidth. And your web host puts a limit on how
much bandwidth you can use per month.

A great many web hosts will simply shut down your site when
you reach your limit for the month. Often they don’t even let
you know that it’s happened. When it does, though, your web
site and your podcast are BOTH “off the air”.

Let’s look at how and why this happens. Suppose you have
a 10MB podcast file you want to share with the world. And
let’s suppose you have a few people listening. But how many?
If your host gives you 10GB per month, up to 1000 people can
download the show. So far, so good.

Now suppose you get your podcast listed in iTunes. Suddenly
up to 40,000,000 people are aware of your podcast. Many of
them will want to hear it. That’s great, right?

Well, it is and it isn’t. If too many people start listening
to your podcast, you’ll end up using all of your bandwidth.
There’s nothing left for delivering web pages. So your site

All webmasters realise that the lifeblood of their website is traffic, without traffic a website is simply a series of codes on a server. However, traffic brings a website to life and the importance of this cannot be under estimated. Getting traffic is big business and a complex process but what I want to do is provide you with a foundation to use when developing your site so that all your work becomes focused on developing your websites traffic.

The key thing to remember is that bringing in traffic is not easy it takes hard work and determination and a commitment to maintain this emphasis as the site grows, my intention is to discuss the ten key processes that you should be using as a minimum in order to build the traffic to your website.

1. Keyword research.

This is the vital first step for any website, you need to find out what keywords and key phrases are best suited to developing the most traffic to your website, how can you do this?

A. Use a keyword research tool.

B. What are your competitors using as keywords, look at their meta tags and look how they link to there website (ie. what anchor text do they use)

C. Is there a niche phrase within the keywords that can be exploited and thus remove some of the competition?

2. Choose your domain name.

This is a vital stage because your domain name should reflect your business because it will become part of your brand, if you’re ideal name is taken then add another word to it so that you can still keep your brand identity. Try to include your main keyword in the domain name, for example, if you are selling widgets and your main keyword/phrase is red widgets then you have the choice between widgets.com or redwidgets.com (if widgets.com is taken).

3. Get content uploaded immediately.

As soon as you have decided your keywords and registered your domain name then write a simple article related to your business, this article should be informative and also detail what your business will be delivering and the proposed go live date. Upload this and make sure that the search engines know of its existence by either submitting it to them or linking to it from another site that is crawled regularly. This process will help you to beat the Sandbox and then when you are fully ready it will be much easier to get the search engine traffic you need.

4. Always put some good content pages up.

Whether you are going to be selling products online or providing an information site, ALWAYS make sure you have 20 or so pages of decent unique content on your site. Your keywords/phrase should be in the title of your page, also set within a “H1″ tag and the content must be relevant to it. Use bold within your page, remember most internet users scan pages initially and having bolded text (ideally keyword/phrases) draws their attention and locks them into reading the full page.

6. Always include a sitemap.

This has two uses, anyone landing on it can see the complete contents of your site and hopefully explore but the main one is that it provides a central hub from which the search engine spiders can hit all your pages. Always link to the site map from the homepage and always keep it up to date whenever you add a page as it is guaranteed to help with the indexing and ranking of your pages in the search engines.

7. Develop a link building strategy.

Back links are the key to any website in the battle for traffic so you must have a process in place, there are so many programs and sites that can be used to develop this but links can be gained using one of the easiest and free techniques on the internet. 8. Use the power of articles.

Become an expert on your subject and write about it frequently, once you have written your article then submit it to as many article directories as you can. Every article you submit has a link back to your site, so whenever anyone puts the article on their site you gain another back link and there are lots of people that visit these article sites to read on their chosen subject and if they see your link and like your article they will click through to your site.

This also increases the authority nature of your site from a visitors perspective, the more they see your name everywhere the more of an ‘expert’ you become and the more they have confidence in your site and the more they will recommend it to others. The power of word or mouth cannot be under estimated.

9. Follow your industry and look ahead.

Always keep yourself up to date with your markets development and write about it early, the sooner you have something written and up on the internet the better. Being a leader in your field will be rewarded by the search engines, linkers and keep your visitors coming back as you will be providing cutting edge information.

10. Study your traffic statistics.

You should constantly be studying where your traffic is coming from so that you can optimise your site to maximise this traffic, most hosts provide detailed statistics on where visitors are coming from and the phrases they are using to find your site. If your host doesn’t provide this then either get a third party statistics package or change hosts, the importance of traffic stats cannot be under estimated.

You need to be looking for the following (as a minimum):

Which sites or search engines are sending you the traffic?
What keywords/phrases are they using to find you?
Which pages are attracting the visitors?
Which pages are the ‘exit’ pages?

This should allow you to develop your site because you will know what sort of pages encourage your visitors to your site, is it the content or a particular page format for example. You can also look at the pages that are ‘exit’ pages and test new designs to see if you can encourage people to stay on your site for longer.

A key information snippet is what keyword/phrase they are using to get to your site. For example, you may be targeting Ebay Templates but when you check your logs you see that the majority are searching for Free Ebay Templates so you take this knowledge and develop some content that targets specifically Free Ebay Templates. Remember knowledge is power and this applies more so in the world of website development.

11. I thought you said there were 10 points in this process?

Now I know I said at the start that there were ten points but this eleventh point is really a re-emphasis of a point made earlier. It is probably the biggest point that I mentioned and as such needs to be re-mentioned, keep your content FRESH. Try to add a new page to your site every couple of days, this page doesn’t have to be massive it should be 400 words as a minimum and be related to your business/market. Every subject in the world can have something written about it on a daily basis and as this is your bread and butter you will be easily able to achieve this.

Without fresh content your search engine rankings will start to slip, your visitors will become bored and go elsewhere.
