Injury to Trees and Shrubs

Weather, animals, and people cause mechanical injury to plants. Of the 3 causes, damage by people is number 1. Most of this damage is caused by the improper use of lawn equipment around the plant. If a lawn mower or weed whacker hit the bark they can cause damage to the tree. By hitting the bark these machines cause damage to the bark as well as the vascular system. By damaging the vascular system you cause the plant to be less effective in the movement of water and sugar which are vital to the health of the plant. By injuring the bark you cause the tree to divert energy from other systems such as branch and leaf development to healing the wound. As a result these plants have a tendency to decline or eventually die.

Roots can also be affected by mechanical injury. Soil compaction occurs because of the increased foot traffic. When soil compaction occurs it decreases the amount of oxygen available to the root structure. Bad weather can also cause mechanical injury. Large amounts of ice and snow can build up during a severe winter. Large accumulations of both of these can cause branches to break. Lightning strikes can also damage or kill a tree. Normally lightning will not knock a tree down, but causes massive damage to the vascular and structural tissues, killing the tree or making it structurally unsafe.

Solving the problem:

There are steps a homeowner can take to decrease the chances of mechanical injury occurring.

Step 1. Use mulch around the base of your tree or shrub to aid in protecting the roots, trunk and branches. 3 inches of mulch is sufficient to achieve this. Do not use white rock or other reflective material as this has the potential to scorch the bark.

Step 2. Proper pruning at the correct time will encourage the growth of a stronger, more vigorous tree.

Step 3. Stake larger trees or shrubs until they become established. Ensure you remove these stakes in the second year to prevent girdling problems in later years

Step 4. Site location is important to prevent damage from wind. If you choose an area that is exposed to wind ensure you use a plant that can tolerate high winds. If you can, provide some sort of windbreak.

Step 5. Although not a big concern, you can install a lightning protection system for taller, more valuable trees. Contact a tree service company for more information on this.

Step 6. Take a little extra time when cutting or landscaping around your trees and shrubs. By being aware of the damage you can cause, you will lessen the chances of injuring your trees and shrubs.

Considering CTP Green Slips

As you consider ctp green slips, realize that this type of minimum coverage of your vehicle is not all the insurance you need. In fact, it is very important to consider what green slips cover and what they do not. If you own a vehicle, you want to have all the protection you can, to protect your investment and your overall financial well being.

CTP or compulsory third party insurance offers protection for anyone riding in the vehicle with you, coverage for others involved in the accident including passengers and drivers in the other car or pedestrians, as well as anyone that may be insured by any trailer you may be towing. This type of insurance pays out when you are found in fault of the accident to help defray the costs of such a tragic event.

While this type of insurance is mandatory in various locations in Australia, it is not always enough coverage for your needs. For example, if you are involved in an accident, the other car may be repaired, but yours will not be covered. Therefore, if you only have this type of insurance coverage, you could be putting your financial future at stake. Find out what other insurance is also helpful.

Creating a Family Recipe Scrapbook

I can not tell you how many times I’ve called my mom and said “mom I just have to have your recipe for such and such”. It’s been a slow accumulation of recipes, but she chuckles each time I realize I need yet another recipe from her.

Now that I have an adult daughter of my own I really wanted to pass the recipes on to her also. Many of these recipes she’s been eating since she was old enough for solids. My daughter also has a recipe book from her aunt on her dad’s side.

Recipe scrapbooks can be given to aunts, uncles, cousins, children etc. A 6×6 scrapbook works wonderfully. They are large enough to hold a 3×5 index card. You can also use an 8×8 scrapbook and have the recipes on paper, instead of index cards.

I think it’s a great mix to combine photos and recipes. For example, a group family photo at the beginning of the album is a great way to start off the album. If you’ve asked for recipes from multiple family members, put a photo of the recipe submitter on one page and the recipe on the opposite page.

It’s also a great help to have a shopping list. Consider the actual recipe on one page and a shopping list on the opposite page. I very often take a recipe to the market with me and shop off the recipe page. By creating the list, the recipe book holder just needs to remove the shopping list page and take it to the market.

Another idea is to create a bit of history with your recipes. If you’ve had several family members contribute recipes, consider having the recipe on page, photos on one page and a bit of information on the author on a 3rd page. Most scrapbooks are very expandable, so there is room for many pages in one album.

All of my cookbooks have measurement charts and converters in them, so when making a recipe album, it’s great to add this information to either the back or the front.

Recipe albums are a great gift for both the new bride, especially if the gift comes from her husband’s family with recipes for all of the dishes he grew up with and for the college graduate setting up their first home.

Lean Leadership – Troubled Waters Require Capable Leaders at the Helm

Canada’s lean leaders need to look beyond the horizon and chart the future. In stormy times, true leadership skills emerge.

The rumbles on our economic outlook are troubling. The dollar is still up, foreign investment, profits and sales are down. Low cost Asian competition is eroding our market share. Financial scandals and corporate governance issues keep flaring into the headlines. Disasters such as terrorism, possible pandemics, and war continually reshape the world in which we work and live. There are so many “big” global issues, so much apparent chaos, that our minds are often distracted from the day-to-day jobs we do leading our businesses.

The world as we know it has changed – both economically and socially. What hasn’t changed however, is the customers’ insatiable appetite for more value, faster delivery and better service.

Most business leaders are eager to return to their pre-recession profits and growth. But even when the economy is robust again, we may find the bounce back to previous profit levels is not a “slam dunk” in spite of a revived and thriving economy. During the past couple of years, while business executives have been making short-term decisions to survive, customers and markets have continued to change at a rate never seen before.

If we turn our worries and blame for new shortfalls to the currency fluctuations and Asian competition, it starts to sound like the same old “blame game” with different players. It’s easy to fly high on adrenaline when you look at these global issues and threats. But, for a moment, let’s step back and look at our business challenges from a lower altitude and a more local focus.

In doing this, we need to disregard the factors affecting our businesses that we can’t influence and begin to look at those we can. The ones we have little or no influence over are things like the recession, currency fluctuations and major disasters. The area we can influence and affect is our own long and short-term strategies for transforming our companies, making them more competitive and customer focused.
The bottom line is let’s stick to our “knitting,” do our jobs and focus more on our roles as organizational leaders.

In North America we’ve proven that we can provide products and services competitively through innovation, inspired product development and comprehensive efforts to eliminate waste. But it does require a prolonged and concentrated effort. Leaders aren’t hired to cry wolf when chaos threatens. The terms of employment are to use our leadership talents and drive improvements that will be seen and sustained on the bottom line.

We need to readjust how we use these talents and not be distracted by global factors, which are out of our control for the most part. We must accept the role we were hired for and focus on the business operations where we can have a real impact.

We are leaders, so let’s lead. Most activities, whatever the company, can be classified as waste of one kind or another once you start to see it. As leaders, it is our responsibility to set the direction and motivate our staff to understand how to remove this waste properly rather than making incremental or point improvements.

This requires seeing and analyzing the process from end to end, not just at points or segments of the process. That becomes your road map to success.

Beneficial change happens in a very structured, sequential and organized fashion. Your teams aren’t caught running around chasing low hanging fruit while creating what we call “exciting chaos.” When everyone rushes reactively to improve their individual areas they feel virtuous, after all they are helping the company, aren’t they? In fact, they are only improving their areas or departments, often at the detriment of the entire process. It’s your leadership and your measured future state plan that will bring order to chaos. Reactive flurry kills profits faster than any big external threat!

Striving to improve our own competitiveness by providing customers faster and better products or services will accomplish more than worrying about the next global crisis looming just around the corner. The only futures game we need to be in is the one that cuts waste so the customer sees more value.

Science tells us that nature likes order – it’s human agents that generate the chaos. There are things that we can control – so let’s get busy and do it!

A Cialis A Day Keeps The Uncertainty Away

The maker of Cialis will apply to the FDA for approval of a once-a-day version of its ED treatment. The company maintains that a daily dose will allow the benefactor to enjoy more spontaneous delight than he can with what the manufacturer refers to as its “on demand” version.

The company maintains that side effects of the new dosage are mild and consist primarily of an inexplicable bulge in the pantaloons.

Dr. Ira D. Sharlip, professor of urology at the Univesity of California, San Francisco, stated, “For patients who are more sexually active, which generally means younger patients, whose sexual activity is more spontaneous, it will be an attractive alternative, provided the cost is not prohibitive.”

Until now, men had to take Cialis and other impotence drugs thirty minutes or more before they flung themselves into the arms of their lovers. Now they’ll be ready at the drop of a belt.

Some analysts doubt that millions of men will take the drug every day, since the biggest users of the therapy generally have sex only a couple of times a week.

Insurance companies may also refuse to pay for a daily dose.

Interestingly, a Cialis a day may also have cardiovascular benefits, since the enzyme that Cialis, as well as other impotence drugs, inhibits, flows in all the body’s blood vessels. As a result, the drug may be an effective treatment for high blood pressure.

An expert stated, “There may be a much bigger picture than just for erectile dysfunction.”

He certainly chose his adjective well, since “bigger” does seem to be the operative word here, except in regard to the one item Cialis does, at its best, reduce the size of, and that is, of course, the performance anxiety, or uncertainty, of the aspiring lover.

Addiction; Desperate Maladies Require Desperate Remedies

An addiction is an uncontrollable strong craving for something,
or to be abnormally dependent on something that is
psychologically or physically habit-forming. There are many
types of addiction, the most common are alcohol addiction,
narcotic addiction, and drug addiction; also known as substance
dependence.

Drug addiction is the compulsive use of drugs, to the extreme
point where the user has no other choice but to continue to use
them. A drug addict might address his beloved drug in De
Quincey’s words, “thou hast the keys of Paradise, oh, just,
subtle, and mighty opium!” An addict’s paradise is an inferno in
disguise.

The demon of drug abuse has engulfed the entire world. It has
clutched the youth of society in its deadly jaws.

The range of addictive drugs or substances and widely abused
drugs include Alcohol, Anabolic steroids, Analgetics,
Barbiturates, Buprenorphine, Butorphanol, Chloral hydrate,
trichloroethanol & derivatives, Cocaine, Codeine, Dextroproxyp,
Dextromethorphan, Ethchlorvynol, Fentanyl & its analogs,
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), Glutethimide, Heroin
(Diacetylmorphine), Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone (Dilaudid),
Ketamine, Laxatives, Levo-alpha-acetylmethadol (LAAM),
Meperidine, Meprobamate, Methamphetamine & other Amphetamines,
Methaqualone & related sedative-hypnotics, Methadone,
Methcathinone, Morphine, Nicotine, Oxycodone, Opium, Xanax,
Paraldehyde (Paral), Phencyclidine (PCP), and Flunitrazepam
(Rohypnol).

Drugs have dragged the addicts to the deep dungeons of oblivion.
The whole international community that is direly worried about
the problem of drug abuse, has given a loud and clear call to
medical institutes and organizations to liberate the victims of
drug addiction.

Psychological experts and researchers are always raking their
minds to know why people fall prey to drugs. Their studies have
divulged that drugs and intoxicants are used to forget or negate
the frustrations of life, failures in life, dejected love
affairs, depression, or sometimes for fun or adventure.

“Thank the Lord, there’s a ray of hope!” Doctors and researchers
have been able to invent some treatments for drug addiction.

Standard drug addiction treatment may include behavioral
therapy, medications, or a combination of both. Medication
therapy includes medical treatment to beat drug addiction.
Behavioral therapy consists of counseling, cognitive therapy, or
psychotherapy. The third method, the combination of both, is
proving to be the most effective treatment for addiction
recovery.

In medication therapy, for instance, addiction treatment like
methadone, LAAM, and naltrexone are helpful for opium addicted
people. Nicotine replacement therapy, nicotine patches, gum,
nasal spray and bupropion are quite effective for people
addicted to nicotine. Antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or
neuroleptics, are helpful for treatment of mental disorders such
as depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, or psychosis.

As drug addiction is a chronic disorder, there’s no effective
short-term treatment for it. It requires a long-term treatment
to beat drug addiction.

Finally, strong will power plays a key role in addiction
treatment and addiction recovery. Psychotherapists can play an
important role in building up the patients’ will to beat drug
addiction.

Martin H. Fischer says, “There is only one reason why men become
addicted to drugs, they are weak men. Only strong men are cured,
and they cure themselves.”

Violet the Pilot in Hawaii – Review

Violet the Pilot in Hawaii is the third book of a children’s series written by author Bettina Bathe. One of the very first striking aspects of this book is the illustrator’s use of bright colored fish and birds, a flowery helicopter, tropical scenery and agriculture within the Hawaiian Island region. The illustrations by Barbara Fortin (www.bellocchioillustration.com) also reveal lush forest and wildlife scenes including a myriad of creatures that dwell in the waters surrounding the islands.

This adventure begins when two Hawaiian youth, Kimo and Malia, request a scenic tour ride in Violet’s purple helicopter. As always, safety comes first for Violet, and they spend a few moments discussing air currents and looking at maps before starting out.

Violet and her passengers are accompanied by as they fly above tropical forests, a beautiful waterfall, interesting volcanoes and agricultural fields. The adventure is interrupted when they are called upon to help rescue a baby whale. Thanks to Violet’s confident pilot skills and her loyal animal and insect friends, the frightened whale is returned to her pod. These unlikely heroes arrive to their destination safely and celebrate with a Luau and a feast. This is no ordinary feast – the table is laden with all kinds of Hawaiian foods. And later, they are entertained by Hula Dancers and Violet plays her Ukulele.

The author incorporates real life terms in her books, yet she is able to explain things in a way that young people can clearly understand. The last page has an illustration with all three of the flags from the countries Violet has worked in so far. These could be excellent teaching and memory tools for the reader to use with children. However, Violet the Pilot in Hawaii offers more than entertainment and education – the author has also dedicated a portion of the sales of this book to the Canadian Red Cross. Additionally, Bettina’s website (www.violetthepilot.com) offers contests and awards for young readers for her young readers to enjoy.

Hyundai Equus: Are Your Ready For a Korean V8?

One generation after the introduction of its first line of cars in the US, Hyundai Motors is preparing to import to the US its first V8 powered car. The Equus, a full sized sedan, will be new to the US market, but the Korean automaker has been making large cars for years. Please read on for more information about this exciting development.

Give Hyundai credit. In the teeth of strong competition from Asian and American automobile manufacturers, the South Korean auto giant has managed to carve out a niche for itself in the hyper-competitive US auto market. Twenty years after the Excel Pony was introduced at the budget price of $3750, Hyundai has upgraded its line up and now sells small and medium models, sporty cars, and a pair of SUVs.

For 2006, Hyundai has released an all new Accent and its first larger car, the Azera. Powered by an aluminum 3.8L V6 engine, the Azera compares favorably in size and in amenities with the Toyota Avalon, the top of the line car for the Japanese automaker. However, Hyundai isn’t finished just yet.

Waiting in the wings is a full sized rear wheel drive car, the Equus. With the same standard engine as the Azera, the Equus also comes with a V8 and will be positioned to compete directly with the Buick Lucerne, perhaps even Cadillac’s DTS. The current model, introduced in 1999, is undergoing a major revision and will be replaced in 2006. Hyundai hopes to bring this model to the US by 2008, although the Equus name might be changed. Hyundai is also looking at the possibility of creating a separate line of luxury cars and making the “Equus” its first entrant.

We don’t know too much about the Equus as Hyundai is keeping mum about what they have planned. Regardless, introducing a full sized luxury car into the US market is smart and knowing how Hyundai prices their products the car will be a relative bargain for consumers and more competition for Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Mercedes, BMW, Lincoln, Buick, and Cadillac.

The End of Compulsive Over Eating

Are you a compulsive over eater? Is your health suffering as a result? If so have you ever stopped to consider what actually drives your habit?

It has been my experience helping individuals with this and other habits over the last 10 years that most habits are usually driven by a deep fear of experiencing some uncomfortable feeling or emotion that would surface if one were to stop, even momentarily, to feed the habit.

The most common feelings that lurk below the surface in this way are feelings of sadness, anxiety, depression, shame, inadequacy, emptiness and loneliness.

These feelings are also usually connected with either negative beliefs we carry within about ourselves and others or the result of emotional pain experienced as a result of trauma or neglect earlier in our lives.

The habit itself becomes compulsive and repetitive because the individual quickly learns that it helps to distract them from the deeper emotional pain that is threatening to emerge.
All the while of course it is killing them though.

Unless the trigger for the habit, i.e. the deep emotional issue is fully released from one’s mind and body, it will continue to resurface and will continue to cause pain. The pain and the fear of it will then continue to drive the habit.

For those of you who are courageous enough to allow the emotional issue to surface while experiencing a new process called the Mind Resonance Process(TM) (MRP) there is now hope that you can become free of it and the habit for good.

MRP is a quick and painless process that facilitates the permanent release of underlying negative beliefs and stored emotional trauma and leaves one feeling more in charge of one’s behaviors and one’s life.

In other words it turns you from being enslaved to being in full mastery of your life.

If you’d like to experience a free interactive audio clip of MRP you may wish to visit the web link below.

Why You Should Go for Secured Loans

When a person plans on taking out a loan, the first thing that should be considered is whether or not to have the loan secured. A secured loan offers a lot of advantages.

What is a secured loan?

A secured loan is a type of loan that is given to a borrower who has placed a property as collateral. This property is usually a house and the secured loan is referred to as a home equity loan. But other things of value can be used as well. Some things that can be used as collateral are stocks, bonds, and other valuable personal belongings.

What are the benefits of a secured loan?

Despite the popularity of unsecured personal loans, some lending companies do offer secured personal loans. A borrower who takes out a secured personal loan can benefit from two important advantages. The first advantage is that the borrowed amount will be significantly higher than the amount borrowed on unsecured loans. In other words, the borrowed amount from secured loans will have a greater impact on one’s finances.

The second advantage is that the interest rates offered with secured loans are infinitely lower. This means that the monthly loan repayments are more affordable and easier to meet than the monthly repayments from unsecured loans.

What is the major disadvantage of a secured loan?

The one major disadvantage of a secured loan is that the property used as collateral faces the risk of being sold or liquidated to pay out the loan if the borrower defaults the payments. That is, if the collateral is the house, and the borrower fails to pay, he will lose his house.

However, this disadvantage of secured personal loans can be turned into another advantage. Since the house (or whatever property) is at risk, the borrower will have greater motivation in paying the loan. Obviously, the borrower would not want to end up losing their house and thereby has a great reason to meet the monthly financial obligation.
